Quinolinic Acid

Meaning

Quinolinic acid (QUIN) is a neuroactive and potentially neurotoxic metabolite generated within the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan catabolism, serving as an endogenous excitotoxin in the central nervous system. Its synthesis is significantly upregulated by chronic immune activation and inflammatory processes, primarily by activated microglial cells and macrophages. Elevated cerebral concentrations of QUIN are implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders due to its destructive effects on neuronal tissue.
