Pyrogen

Meaning

A pyrogen is any substance, typically a product of microbial origin or a host-derived cytokine, that induces a fever when introduced into the body. These fever-inducing agents act by stimulating the release of endogenous pyrogens, such as interleukin-1, from immune cells. In clinical practice and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the presence of pyrogens, especially bacterial endotoxins, in injectable hormonal preparations is a critical quality concern because it can lead to serious systemic inflammatory reactions.
