Pulsatile Release

Meaning

Pulsatile release refers to the characteristic, intermittent pattern of secretion for certain key hormones, particularly those originating from the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, rather than a continuous, steady flow. This rhythmic, episodic burst of hormone release is crucial for maintaining the sensitivity and proper function of target tissue receptors. The frequency and amplitude of these pulses are tightly regulated by complex neuroendocrine feedback loops and are essential for normal physiological processes, such as reproduction and stress adaptation. A disruption in this pulsatile pattern, for instance, can lead to significant reproductive or metabolic dysfunction.
