Pulmonary Embolism

Meaning

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an acute and potentially life-threatening clinical event characterized by the obstruction of one or more pulmonary arteries by an embolus, typically a dislodged blood clot (thrombus) originating from the deep veins of the legs. This obstruction compromises the perfusion of the lung tissue, leading to a ventilation-perfusion mismatch and subsequent hypoxemia. In hormonal health, the risk of PE is a critical consideration, as certain hormonal therapies, particularly those containing synthetic estrogens, can significantly increase the propensity for venous thromboembolism.
