Pubertal Gynecomastia

Meaning

Pubertal gynecomastia is a benign, self-limiting enlargement of the glandular breast tissue in males that commonly occurs during the rapid and often turbulent hormonal shifts of adolescence. This clinical presentation is fundamentally caused by a transient, physiological imbalance between the circulating levels of estrogen and androgen hormones, resulting in estrogen having a relatively greater stimulatory effect on the developing breast tissue. While it is typically a temporary condition that resolves spontaneously, it necessitates careful endocrine evaluation to definitively exclude underlying pathological etiologies.
