Psychosocial Stress Appraisal

Meaning

Psychosocial stress appraisal is the subjective cognitive and emotional process by which an individual evaluates a specific environmental or social demand as either a threat or a challenge, and simultaneously assesses their own resources to cope with it. This appraisal is the critical psychological step that determines the intensity and duration of the subsequent physiological stress response, including the activation of the HPA axis and the sympathetic nervous system. It is a key modifiable factor in effective stress management.
