Psychological Autonomy

Meaning

Psychological Autonomy is the inherent capacity and right of an individual to engage in volitional, self-endorsed behavior, especially concerning their health decisions and wellness journey. In a clinical setting, this means the patient’s choices are made with full information, free from coercion, and are congruent with their personal values and integrated sense of self. Respecting this autonomy is a core ethical pillar of patient-centered care.
