Psychobiological Allostasis

Meaning

Psychobiological Allostasis is the dynamic, adaptive process by which the brain and body actively adjust and regulate internal physiological parameters to maintain stability in the face of psychological and physical stress. Unlike simple homeostasis, which seeks to maintain a fixed internal state, allostasis involves predictive changes in the endocrine, autonomic, and immune systems to meet anticipated or perceived demands. This concept highlights the brain’s critical role in coordinating systemic responses to perceived or actual environmental challenges, integrating mind and body.
