PSA Test

Meaning

The PSA Test is a clinical blood assay that measures the serum concentration of Prostate-Specific Antigen, a glycoprotein primarily produced by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. This diagnostic tool is utilized primarily for screening for prostate cancer and monitoring disease progression or recurrence following treatment. An elevated PSA level indicates increased prostate activity, which may be due to malignancy, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or inflammation. Interpreting the result requires careful consideration of the patient’s age and clinical history.
