PSA Density

Meaning

PSA Density (PSAD) is a calculated urological metric that refines the clinical interpretation of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test by explicitly accounting for the size of the prostate gland. It is calculated by dividing the total serum PSA level by the prostate volume, which is typically measured by transrectal ultrasound. This density value helps clinicians differentiate between PSA elevation caused by benign prostatic enlargement (BPH) and that potentially caused by malignant prostate cancer. It is a key factor in deciding on the need for a biopsy.
