PSA

Meaning

The clinical abbreviation for Prostate-Specific Antigen, a glycoprotein enzyme produced primarily by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Although its main function is to liquefy semen, its concentration in the bloodstream is used as a crucial biomarker in men’s health. Elevated serum PSA levels can indicate prostate gland enlargement, inflammation, or, importantly, the presence of prostate cancer. Interpretation of PSA values must always be done in the context of clinical history and physical examination.
