Proximal Tubules

Meaning

The Proximal Tubules are the highly specialized, convoluted initial segments of the renal tubule within the kidney’s nephron, bearing the primary responsibility for the bulk reabsorption of vital substances from the initial glomerular filtrate back into the systemic circulation. These structures are indispensable for maintaining fluid, electrolyte, and nutrient homeostasis, as they recover approximately two-thirds of the filtered water, sodium, glucose, and amino acids. Their critical function is intricately regulated by various systemic hormones, including parathyroid hormone and angiotensin II, establishing them as a key nexus of endocrine-renal interaction.
