Prothrombotic State

Meaning

A prothrombotic state, also known as a hypercoagulable state, is a physiological condition characterized by an increased tendency for blood clot formation due to an imbalance in the body’s coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. This state increases the risk of venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In hormonal health, the route of hormone administration is a critical determinant, as oral estrogen therapy can significantly induce this state by altering hepatic protein synthesis. Clinicians must carefully assess a patient’s baseline risk factors before initiating any hormone regimen.
