Prothrombin Time

Meaning

Prothrombin Time (PT) is a standard clinical laboratory test that quantifies the time required for a patient’s blood plasma to form a clot after the addition of an exogenous tissue factor and calcium. This test specifically evaluates the functional integrity of the extrinsic and common pathways of the blood coagulation cascade. Clinically, the PT is indispensable for screening for inherited or acquired deficiencies in clotting factors, particularly those dependent on Vitamin K, and for monitoring the therapeutic effect of oral anticoagulant medications.
