Meaning

Protein phosphorylation is a critical post-translational modification in which a phosphate group is covalently attached to a protein, typically at serine, threonine, or tyrosine residues, by an enzyme called a protein kinase. This simple addition of a negatively charged phosphate group acts as a molecular switch, fundamentally altering the protein’s conformation, function, and interaction with other molecules. It is the most common regulatory mechanism in cell biology, controlling nearly all cellular processes, including hormone signal transduction, metabolism, and cell division.
