Protein Kinase C Ζ

Meaning

Protein Kinase C zeta (PKCζ) is a specific, atypical isoform of the Protein Kinase C family of serine/threonine kinases, distinguished by its unique regulatory mechanisms that are independent of calcium and diacylglycerol. This enzyme acts as a critical signal transducer within the cell, participating in numerous fundamental processes, including cell growth, differentiation, survival, and metabolic regulation. Its activity is particularly important in insulin signaling, where it helps mediate the translocation of glucose transporters to the cell membrane. Dysregulation of PKCζ is implicated in various pathological states, notably insulin resistance and the development of certain cancers.
