Protein Aggregation

Meaning

Protein aggregation is a pathological process where normally soluble and functional proteins misfold and accumulate into insoluble, ordered or amorphous deposits, often forming amyloid fibrils or inclusion bodies. This molecular event compromises cellular function by sequestering essential proteins, disrupting organelle integrity, and inducing proteotoxicity, ultimately leading to cellular dysfunction and death. It is a hallmark feature in the pathogenesis of numerous neurodegenerative and age-related diseases.
