Prostatic Hyperplasia

Meaning

Prostatic Hyperplasia, clinically known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is a common, non-malignant condition characterized by the excessive proliferation and enlargement of both the glandular epithelial cells and the stromal tissue within the prostate gland. This progressive increase in prostate volume often leads to mechanical compression of the urethra, resulting in bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in aging men. The etiology of BPH is intrinsically linked to the cumulative effects of androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and the changing balance of sex hormones over the lifespan.
