Prostate-Specific Antigen

Meaning

Prostate-Specific Antigen, or PSA, is a glycoprotein enzyme produced almost exclusively by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland, which functions primarily to liquefy semen. Clinically, it serves as a critical biomarker measured in serum to screen for and monitor prostate pathology, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate carcinoma. While elevated PSA levels warrant further investigation, the interpretation must consider age, prostate volume, and the influence of sex hormones, particularly testosterone and estrogen, which directly regulate prostate cell proliferation and PSA production.
