Prostate-Specific Antigen

Meaning

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein produced primarily by the epithelial cells lining the prostate gland, functioning normally as a liquefying enzyme for semen. Clinically, serum PSA levels are extensively used as a biomarker for monitoring prostate health and detecting potential pathology, including benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate carcinoma. Elevated levels prompt further investigation into androgen-dependent prostatic conditions. It remains a key metric in male hormonal health surveillance.
