Prostate Homeostasis

Meaning

Prostate homeostasis is the dynamic state of stable equilibrium within the male prostate gland, characterized by a precise balance between cellular proliferation, programmed cell death (apoptosis), and normal secretory function. Maintaining this balance is fundamentally dependent on the tightly regulated action of androgen hormones, particularly testosterone and its more potent metabolite, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Disruption of this delicate hormonal equilibrium is a primary driver of common prostate pathologies, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer.
