Prostate Cancer Recurrence

Meaning

Prostate Cancer Recurrence is the return of detectable cancer after a period where the disease was undetectable following initial treatment, such as surgery or radiation therapy. This is most commonly identified through a rising trend in Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels in the blood, a condition known as biochemical recurrence. The recurrence can be local, meaning the cancer has returned to the prostate area, or distant, indicating metastasis to other parts of the body. Given the hormone-sensitive nature of most prostate cancers, managing recurrence often involves re-evaluating the hormonal milieu and implementing further androgen deprivation strategies.
