Prostaglandin Synthesis

Meaning

The complex biochemical pathway responsible for the cellular production of prostaglandins, which are a group of potent lipid compounds derived from fatty acids, primarily arachidonic acid. These eicosanoids act as local, autocrine, and paracrine mediators, regulating a wide array of physiological processes including inflammation, pain perception, blood flow, and reproductive function. In the endocrine system, prostaglandins play a crucial role in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, particularly in ovulation and uterine contraction. The synthesis process is often targeted by pharmaceutical agents to modulate inflammatory responses.
