PROP1

Meaning

PROP1, or the Prophet of Pit-1 gene, is a transcription factor critical for the embryonic development and subsequent differentiation of specific cell lineages within the anterior pituitary gland. Its proper function is essential for the production of several key trophic hormones, including growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Genetic mutations in the PROP1 gene are a common cause of combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD), leading to complex hormonal deficits in affected individuals.
