Prolactin Management

Meaning

Prolactin Management is the clinical strategy of regulating the secretion and action of the pituitary hormone prolactin to maintain hormonal balance, reproductive function, and overall well-being. While prolactin is primarily known for its role in lactation, chronically elevated levels outside of pregnancy, a condition known as hyperprolactinemia, can suppress the HPG axis, leading to hypogonadism, infertility, and reduced libido in both sexes. Effective management often involves addressing underlying causes, such as pituitary adenomas, medication side effects, or chronic stress, to restore normal dopaminergic tone. The goal is to keep prolactin within its optimal physiological range for peak endocrine function.
