Prolactin Level Monitoring

Meaning

Prolactin Level Monitoring is the clinical practice of measuring the concentration of the pituitary-derived hormone prolactin in the serum, primarily to assess the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and to screen for potential endocrine disorders, particularly pituitary adenomas. While prolactin is primarily known for its role in lactation, its elevation outside of pregnancy or breastfeeding can suppress gonadal hormones and indicate underlying physiological stress or a mass lesion. Careful monitoring is essential for men and non-pregnant women undergoing hormonal therapies.
