Prolactin Interference

Meaning

Prolactin Interference refers to the disruptive physiological effects of elevated prolactin levels, known as hyperprolactinemia, on the function of other critical endocrine axes, particularly the reproductive axis. Excess prolactin, a pituitary hormone primarily associated with lactation, can suppress the pulsatile release of GnRH from the hypothalamus, leading to secondary hypogonadism in both sexes. This interference clinically manifests as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction in men, menstrual irregularities in women, and potential bone density loss due to suppressed sex steroids. Identifying and addressing the source of this interference is crucial for restoring hormonal balance and reproductive health.
