Prolactin Elevation

Meaning

Prolactin Elevation, or hyperprolactinemia, is a clinical condition characterized by abnormally high circulating levels of the hormone prolactin, which is primarily secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. While prolactin’s main physiological role is to stimulate lactation in postpartum women, elevated levels in non-pregnant individuals can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, leading to hypogonadism, infertility, and galactorrhea. Clinical evaluation is essential to identify the underlying cause, which may range from pharmacological side effects to pituitary adenomas.
