Prohormone

Meaning

A biologically inactive or minimally active precursor molecule, which can be a steroid or a peptide, that undergoes a specific enzymatic conversion within the body to become a fully active hormone. This compound typically exhibits little or no direct biological effect until it is metabolized in a target tissue or the systemic circulation. Prohormones are a natural stage in the body’s steroidogenesis and peptide processing pathways and are sometimes utilized therapeutically to selectively increase the concentration of a specific active hormone.
