Progressive Overload Principle

Meaning

Progressive Overload Principle is a fundamental tenet of exercise physiology asserting that for muscle strength, hypertrophy, and endurance to continually improve, the body must be subjected to stresses that are incrementally greater than those previously encountered. This systematic increase in demand forces the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems to adapt and rebuild to a higher level of capacity. It is a necessary mechanical stimulus for initiating anabolic hormonal signaling and long-term tissue adaptation.
