Progestogen

Meaning

Progestogen is a class of steroid hormones that bind to and activate the progesterone receptor, exerting effects similar to those of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. This class includes both endogenous progesterone and various synthetic compounds, known as progestins, which are utilized in clinical settings. Progestogens are essential for preparing the endometrium for pregnancy, maintaining gestation, and counterbalancing the proliferative effects of estrogen on the uterine lining. They are widely used in hormone replacement therapy, contraception, and the management of certain gynecological conditions.
