Progestin

Meaning

A progestin is a synthetic compound that mimics the actions of the naturally occurring steroid hormone progesterone by binding to and activating progesterone receptors in target tissues. These pharmaceutical agents are widely utilized in clinical practice for hormonal contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and the management of various gynecological conditions. Progestins are structurally distinct from, but functionally analogous to, endogenous progesterone. Clinicians select specific progestins based on their unique pharmacological profiles.
