Progesterone Synthesis

Meaning

Progesterone synthesis is the biochemical pathway responsible for the creation of the steroid hormone progesterone, a critical progestogen essential for preparing the endometrium for implantation and maintaining pregnancy. Beyond its reproductive roles, progesterone also acts as a neurosteroid, influencing mood and cognitive function, and serves as a precursor in the synthesis of other corticosteroids and androgens. This complex process is tightly regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and is a key indicator of luteal phase health.
