Progesterone Resistance

Meaning

Progesterone resistance is a clinical state characterized by a diminished or absent biological response of target tissues, particularly the uterine endometrium, to circulating or administered progesterone, despite adequate or high hormone levels. This phenomenon is often attributed to defects in the expression, function, or downstream signaling of the progesterone receptor (PR). In reproductive health, progesterone resistance is implicated in conditions like endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, and certain forms of abnormal uterine bleeding, where the protective and regulatory effects of progesterone are compromised. It represents a functional deficit at the cellular level, rather than a deficiency in hormone production.
