Progesterone Receptor

Meaning

The Progesterone Receptor (PR) is an intracellular protein belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily that acts as a ligand-activated transcription factor, mediating the biological effects of the steroid hormone progesterone. These receptors are expressed in numerous tissues, including the uterus, breast, brain, and bone, playing a crucial role in reproductive health and neuroprotection. Progesterone must bind to this receptor to initiate its downstream genomic and non-genomic signaling cascades.
