Progesterone Receptor (PGR)

Meaning

The Progesterone Receptor (PGR) is an intracellular, ligand-activated transcription factor belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily that mediates the diverse biological effects of the hormone progesterone. Found in target tissues such as the uterus, breast, brain, and bone, the receptor exists in two main isoforms, PRA and PRB, which regulate gene expression in a tissue-specific manner. The interaction between progesterone and its receptor is fundamental to reproductive function, neuroprotection, and mammary gland development.
