Progesterone Production

Meaning

Progesterone production is the critical biosynthesis and secretion of the steroid hormone progesterone, primarily by the corpus luteum in the ovaries during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and by the placenta during pregnancy. In men and premenopausal women, smaller, yet physiologically important, amounts are also produced by the adrenal glands as a precursor to other steroids. This hormone is vital for regulating the menstrual cycle, preparing the endometrium for potential pregnancy, and maintaining gestation, in addition to its well-documented neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing effects.
