Progesterone Decline

Meaning

Progesterone decline refers to the physiological reduction in the circulating concentration of the steroid hormone progesterone, typically observed at the end of the menstrual cycle or throughout the perimenopausal transition. This drop is a normal event following the involution of the corpus luteum if pregnancy does not occur, initiating menstruation. Clinically, a pathological or premature decline can lead to symptoms such as luteal phase defects, menstrual irregularities, mood disturbances, and reduced bone mineral density, significantly impacting a woman’s hormonal health and well-being.
