Progesterone Antagonism

Meaning

Progesterone antagonism describes the specific pharmacological or physiological action of a substance that binds to the intracellular progesterone receptor (PR) but, crucially, fails to activate the receptor, thereby blocking the ability of endogenous progesterone to exert its normal biological effects. Clinically, progesterone antagonists are therapeutically employed to selectively inhibit progesterone action in target tissues, a mechanism that is useful in applications such as emergency contraception, medical abortion, or the management of certain hormone-sensitive tumors. This action provides a powerful, non-surgical tool for modulating the reproductive and endocrine axes.
