Progesterone and Bone Health

Meaning

The crucial, often underappreciated, physiological role of the steroid hormone progesterone in maintaining bone mineral density and skeletal structural integrity throughout the adult lifespan. Progesterone acts synergistically with estrogen to regulate the dynamic process of bone remodeling, which involves the balance between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Adequate progesterone levels are particularly important in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and during perimenopause to prevent accelerated bone loss. This hormonal action is essential for long-term fracture prevention.
