Progenitor Cells

Meaning

Progenitor cells represent an intermediate stage in cellular development, positioned between undifferentiated stem cells and fully specialized mature cells. These cells possess a restricted differentiation potential, meaning they are committed to forming specific cell lineages within a particular tissue or organ system. Unlike pluripotent stem cells, their self-renewal capacity is limited, yet they retain the ability to divide and generate numerous specialized progeny when needed for tissue maintenance or repair.
