Procedural Memory Sleep

Meaning

The specific phase of sleep, predominantly characterized by Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, that is instrumental in the consolidation, refinement, and optimization of implicit memories related to skills and habits. This memory type includes complex motor skills, perceptual learning, and learned sequences that are recalled unconsciously, such as perfecting a golf swing or learning a complex dance routine. REM sleep facilitates the efficient transfer of these motor programs from initial encoding sites to more robust, permanent cortical motor areas.
