Probiotic Foods

Meaning

Probiotic Foods are dietary items, typically fermented, that contain live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host, primarily by modulating the gut microbiota. These beneficial bacteria and yeasts, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, play a critical role in nutrient absorption, immune system development, and the synthesis of essential metabolites. In the hormonal health space, they are increasingly recognized for their influence on the gut-brain axis and the enterohepatic circulation of estrogens (the “estrobolome”).
