Pro-Thrombotic State

Meaning

A pro-thrombotic state, also known as thrombophilia, is a pathological condition characterized by an increased propensity for the formation of blood clots (thrombi) within the circulatory system, raising the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) or arterial thrombosis. This clinical state results from an imbalance in the delicate hemostatic system, where pro-coagulant factors dominate over natural anticoagulant and fibrinolytic mechanisms. It represents a significant cardiovascular risk factor, necessitating careful assessment of genetic and acquired risk factors in susceptible individuals.
