Pro-Opiomelanocortin (POMC)

Meaning

Pro-Opiomelanocortin (POMC) is a large precursor polypeptide hormone synthesized primarily in the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, which is proteolytically cleaved into several distinct, biologically active peptides. These resultant peptides, including Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (MSH), and beta-endorphin, are central to the regulation of stress response, pigmentation, appetite, and pain modulation. POMC is a key component of the neuroendocrine system’s response to physiological demand and homeostatic control.
