Pro-Inflammatory Eicosanoids

Meaning

Pro-Inflammatory Eicosanoids are a family of highly biologically active lipid mediators, including specific prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, derived from the oxidation of arachidonic acid and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. These molecules are rapidly synthesized and locally released at sites of acute injury or infection, acting as potent local hormones that initiate and dramatically amplify the acute inflammatory response. While essential for host defense and immediate repair, their chronic overproduction contributes significantly to systemic inflammation and the pathogenesis of chronic diseases.
