Primordial Follicles

Meaning

Primordial follicles represent the finite, non-renewable reserve of immature ovarian follicles established in the female fetus before birth, forming the basis of the ovarian reserve. Each microscopic follicle consists of a primary oocyte arrested in the first meiotic prophase, enveloped by a single layer of flattened, quiescent granulosa cells. This entire pool dictates the reproductive lifespan of a woman and the eventual timing of the menopausal transition. The size of this reserve is a critical determinant of fertility potential.
