Primordial Follicle

Meaning

The primordial follicle is the most basic and numerous reserve unit of the female ovary, consisting of a primary oocyte arrested in the prophase stage of meiosis I, surrounded by a single layer of flattened granulosa cells. These quiescent follicles constitute the entire ovarian reserve at birth and remain dormant until recruited to begin the process of folliculogenesis, which is essential for reproductive cycles. The size and quality of this primordial follicle pool directly determine a woman’s reproductive lifespan.
