Primary Engineering Control

Meaning

A Primary Engineering Control (PEC) is a device or physical structure designed to provide an ISO Class 5 or better environment for compounding sterile preparations, which is essential for minimizing the risk of microbial contamination. These controls, such as laminar airflow workbenches (LAFWs) or compounding aseptic isolators (CAIs), create a unidirectional, filtered airflow over the compounding area. In the compounding pharmacy setting, especially for sterile injectable hormonal therapies or peptides, the PEC is the most critical line of defense for ensuring product sterility and patient safety. Strict adherence to operational and cleaning procedures within the PEC is mandatory.
