Primary Aldosteronism

Meaning

Primary Aldosteronism, often clinically referred to as Conn’s syndrome, is a common endocrine disorder characterized by the excessive, autonomous production of the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone from the adrenal glands. This overproduction occurs independently of the normal regulatory control by the renin-angiotensin system. The resulting hormonal imbalance leads to often-resistant hypertension and frequently causes hypokalemia, or abnormally low potassium levels. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for preventing severe cardiovascular and renal damage.
